The Fishers Wife
Tonyia’s carving journey began about ten years ago with a piece of scrap cedar and an idea. After building a small cottage on the Bagaduce River with her husband, she wanted something for the outside that reflected their love of the Maine coast. A friend offered her some reclaimed cedar, and she carved her first whale—a piece that still hangs at the cottage today.
That first whale led to many more, along with hand-carved fish, boats, and fishermen. Having raised her daughters on the Bagaduce River with her husband, a local lobsterman, Tonyia draws inspiration from Maine’s working waterfront. Her carvings give new life to forgotten wood while celebrating the place she calls home.
